The "Semester" is a resident program at the National Zoological Park Conservation and Research Center in Front Royal Virginia. This beautiful 3200 acre facility adjacent to Shenandoah National Park is one of the premier conservation research facilities in the world, housing some of the rarest species on earth. Students live and learn among prominent research scientists, educators and conservation practitioners. This experience provides unparalleled access to the leading edge of conservation in practice. It is truly a unique “gateway to conservation” for the intrigued undergraduate student.

Our graduates go on to internships with a variety of agencies, and/or graduate programs. Upon completion of the Semester, students will leave with a foundation of professional and scientific knowledge, and a new perspective about the value of biodiversity and the practice of conservation.

The Semester is a 16-credit integrated learning community (5 courses). Grounded in natural science, this interdisciplinary semester brings public policy, sociology, conflict resolution and global awareness to the learning environment. For an overview of the Semester courses click here. Students with upper-division standing (60 undergraduate credits) and an introductory science course are eligible to apply for the Semester. Students who have already completed a bachelor's degree may also apply.

For more information, please complete the interest form read our flier or email smithsem@gmu.edu. We will respond promptly. Our advisors will be happy to assist you with any questions regarding academic credit toward your degree.

Semester participants will be required to undergo a security background investigation and fingerprinting through the Smithsonian Office of Protection Services before the semester begins.
